A FLINTSHIRE girl who swapped birthday presents for charitable donations has helped raise hundreds of pounds.

Elaina Jones, 9, from Mold wanted people to donate money to Macmillan cancer support instead of giving her birthday presents.

And on Saturday. she had her birthday party where the donations were counted, and she has helped raise a brilliant £210, with some donations still to come in.

Elaina has been inspired by hearing about the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning fundraising event. Each year, people in the UK and worldwide host their own coffee morning, with all proceeds going to the cancer support charity.

She said: ''My party was great, I really enjoyed it but I feel best about how much money I have raised for Macmillan.

''I would like to thank all of my friends for coming and being so kind in giving donations, and those who gave presents as well as donations.''

Eleri Brady, Macmillan’s Fundraising Manager for North Wales, said: ''We would like to say a big thank you to Elaina for such a generous gesture of asking for donations to Macmillan instead of birthday presents for her ninth birthday.

''Macmillan Cancer Support relies on the generosity of our supporters and Elaina’s kind gesture will help us support to people living with cancer in North Wales including our nurses, our information and support centres and our benefits advisers.''
