A MUM narrowly avoided a disaster following a fallen tree caused by Storm Diana.

Jayne Connolly, of Ffynnongroew, was travelling to Holywell with her eight-year-old daughter when a tree came crashing down in front of their car on Wednesday evening.

The mum-of-two slammed on her brakes as soon as she saw something out of the corner of her eye, but said she did not expect something like that.

She added: "I slammed on instinctively then the tree came crashing down. If I hadn't slammed on it would have been on my roof.

"It all happened so fast, one minute I was driving and the next minute there's a tree in front of me.

"I have a panoramic roof so it's made of glass, it doesn't bare thinking about. I'm just glad I spotted it in time. It could have been a lot worse, that's the scary thing."

The incident happened near Abakhan, Mostyn at about 5pm and Jayne's daughter has been left shaken by the event.

Storm Diana swept through the UK, with strong winds of 70mph and caused road closures throughout the country. The Met Office issued yellow warnings for wind and rain.

Jayne said she is thankful for the local community and surrounding motorists who stopped to help them.

She told the Leader: "I'm very thankful we are still here, at the end of the day cars can be replaced. Ava is quite shaken up though.

"Just be on your guard in conditions like this, it wasn't even that windy, at least it didn't feel like it.

"I would like to thank all of the people that helped. The tree was right across the road so obviously traffic couldn't get past.

"People got out there cars to help move the tree and get it out from under my car. They made sure we were both okay and two women from the cafe came and brought us drinks, they were lovely.

"The car suffered some damage to the bumper and the spotlights but we are very lucky."
