RESUBMITTED plans for a development on land in Llay have been given short shrift by community councillors.

The mixed use development, which includes residential, retail and a boxing club on the Llay Royal British Legion site, were rejected by Wrexham council’s planning committee back in July, but are now back on the table, less than six months later.

But at a meeting of Llay Community Council on Wednesday, the plans were discussed.

Councillors provided the same opposition as they had done previously, with the reasons for doing so being down to the site being inappropriate, lacking in suitable infrastructure and not being substantially different.

Cllr Brian Apsley, who chairs the council, said: “It’s not just the lack of a schools or doctors. It’s the density of the housing plan, the roads, one of which I think could be particularly dangerous.

“If they’ve got the chance to resubmit their application, I’m going to do the same with my comments on behalf of this council.”

Cllr Rob Walsh said he supported the decision made by the planning committee back in July and that the plans, which were rejected, should be given the same response this time, with no substantial changes made to them.

He said: “My comments are going to be brief and to the point as I still agree with the decision that was made by the planning committee in July 2018.”

At the meeting in July, the planning committee chose to turn down the plans, which included 51 new homes, after hearing strong objections from residents and members of the armed forces community, amid concerns over the impact of the development on already overstretched schools and GP surgeries in the area.

The plans have also led to a dispute between the central RBL headquarters, which is behind the plans, and the Llay branch over whether the proposals could potentially lead to the social club closing its doors.

Members of the planning committee are unlikely to consider the plans until the New Year.
