Officers from the Prison Corruption Unit at the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU) arrested a prison officer based at HMP Berwyn.

A 26-year-old woman from Wrexham was arrested at 8am on Monday on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and conveying prohibited articles into prison.

Officers investigating the incident also executed a warrant at a property near Wrexham and recovered phones and other property.

A coordinated search was also conducted in the prison during which prohibited articles were recovered.

Danny Khan, acting governor at HMP Berwyn, said: “A member of staff from HMP Berwyn has been arrested as part of a successful joint investigation between the Prison Service and the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit.

“We have a zero tolerance approach to corruption and those who do break the rules will face the full force of the law.”

Detective Sergeant John Davies from NWROCU said: “This arrest is yet another example of the work NWROCU and Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) have undertaken in the last two years to tackle the problem of corruption within prisons.

"This I hope will be reassure those honest, dedicated and hardworking staff members at HMP Berwyn that if they spot the warning signs of people engaging in corrupt activity and report it, we at NWROCU and HMPPS will take positive action.”
