LOTTERY funding is available to boost the aspirations of residents on a Wrexham estate.

Kristian Lozstyn, a development worker based at the Caia Park Partnershp, for the People's Health Trust, gave a presentation to members of the community council at their meeting this month.

He said grant funds are available for various groups and residents to use for activities which bring the community together and encourage volunteering.

The money is there to give people the opportunity to develop their skills and become more social, getting to know their neighbours and creating a community spirit.

It is to help raise aspirations in areas where life expectancy is lower than average, and considered to have poorer social and economic status.

The funding is provided by the People's Health Trust and the Health Lottery and group's or residents can apply up to £500 to fund each activity which has a benefit for the community.

Funding applications are decided on by a grants panel made up of members of the community who volunteer to get involved.

An example of such an activity could be a trip to the zoo for a group of youngsters.

Mr Losztyn said: "The estate's strength is there are 12,500 people here, an army, and it is about the skills of local residents and encouraging them to take a more active role in what we're doing.

"Everyone has assets, everyone has skills and every can contribute.

"It is about improving the fabric of society to improve life for people and it is citizens led."

Smithfield County Councillor Adrienne Jeorrett said she had ideas for suitable applicants as residents had already contacted her about organising a get together.

She said: "There are residents interested in pulling three streets together, for people to get to now each other."
