COVERT cameras could be introduced to capture flytippers.

Shotton town council is hoping to introduce hidden cameras in a bid to capture those responsible for leaving rubbish in the area.

Cllr Mike Evans, of the East Ward, told the Leader: "I have been pushing for it for the past seven years to get covert cameras. The amount of time and money we are wasting on flytipping is unbelievable, it must go into 10 thousand pounds which is more than a camera costs.

"I've been pushing for them in certain areas because they are hotspots for flytipping.

"We have residents who are quite willing to have covert cameras fitted because they are always looking at it. It can't go on.

"Once caught they can get a big fine and hopefully we get the word around that we won't accept it anymore.

"It's not acceptable anywhere never mind in a small town. It's wrong and they can't come quick enough."

Councillors were told at their monthly meeting by Wayne Jones from Streetscene that there are a few hurdles to get past first, including legislation and GDPR.

He said: "We are well on our way with that. The original cameras we looked at were £300 each but they are not fit for purpose so we will use the same type as police.

"Due to GDPR it's a big thing we need to look at but hopefully it will be resolved by Christmas."

The Leader has previously reported on the issues raised regarding flytipping in the Shotton area.

Cllr Sean Bibby said at the meeting: "It does seem progress is being made but there are hurdles we need to get over.

"I think we will have a lot of support from people.

"It's a move in the right direction and hopefully by New Year we will have cameras."
