A FLINTSHIRE town marked the 100th year since the ending of the First World War with a commemorative event on Saturday.

The Buckley Royal British legion, with the support of Buckley Town Council, held a community activity within Costa Coffee in Buckley on Saturday. The event is part of a project to commemorate the end of the First World War 100 years ago this year on 11th November 1918 and say Thank You to the WW1 generation.

Steve Evans, Chairman of Buckley Royal British Legion had the idea of using tiles to link with Buckley’s brick making history. The project aims to have 114 tiles painted in memory of each soldier from Buckley who fell during the First World War named on the Hawkesbury Memorial.

Alison Mowlem, Community Fundraiser for the Royal British Legion in Merseyside and West Lancashire, said : ''Community support for the project was amazing. ''Everyone has a connection to the First World War, and many families in Buckley have relatives named on the Hawkesbury Memorial. We all have a reason to say ‘Thank You’ for the legacy that extraordinary generation left for us.

''The First World War left countless legacies that positively impact our lives today, from ground breaking social change and timeless works of art to pioneering innovations. As we come to the end of the First World War Centenary now is the time to come together and this project is just a small way to bring the community of Buckley together and say ‘Thank You.”

The tiles will be laid during the remembrance parade on Armistice day. The Buckley parade meets at 9.30 in the main car park by the precinct, near the Aldi. The parade leaves at 10am to march to St Matthews Church. Following the service and the laying of the wreaths, and tiles the Buckley Historical Society will be hosting Light refreshments in the Community Centre at Jubilee Court.

Anyone wishing to get involved and lay a tile during the parade can contact Alison Mowlem via email on amowlem@britishlegion.org.uk.
