A LOCAL town came alive over the weekend following a festival to celebrate the life and achievements of the area.

Dozens of people turned up to see the celebration of the Daniel Owen Square in Mold during its annual literature, music and arts festival this week and marks the month of his birth and death.

Saturday afternoon saw a performance by Cambria Band and the traditional wreath ceremony at the statue of the Victorian author, Daniel Owen.

The annual wreath laying at three of the memorials associated with the author took place at Mold Cemetery with Mayor Karen Hodgkinson and Daniel Owen’s Statue and at his memorial stone on Denbigh Road with Cllr Brian Lloyd.

A spokesman for the event said: “Activities over the first weekend were relaxed, friendly and ‘slow’, valuing what is unique and specific about our own local culture, tradition and sense of place.”

On Saturday, families enjoyed a creative arts event with Gwenno Jones from Theatr Clwyd where they produced full-sized drawings at the ‘My Statue’ event.

Chris Baglin (Professor Llusern) spoke to people at Mold Library on the Sunday about five stories, some of which related to the area and all of which tied in with clues for the following treasure hunt.

There was also a chance to speak and listen to Welsh at a well-attended coffee morning, sponsored by Barclays Bank.

The Daniel Owen Festival continues this week until Friday, October 27 and has many events in and around Mold to celebrate the life of the author.
