STUDENTS enjoyed a creative writing workshop with a writer in residence from Theatr Clwyd.

The workshop at Flint High School was organised as part of this year’s Daniel Owen Festival, which starts on Saturday (October 20).

Twenty-eight students participated in the session after Theatr Clwyd contacted Flint High with a view to launching the Daniel Owen Writing Competition 2018 at the high school.

The theme for the competition is 'the sea' which links in with Visit Wales’ Year of the Sea 2018 promotion.

Writer, director and comedian Carri Munn led the workshop and began with ice-breaker games to help the creative juices flow.

One of the main objectives was to enthuse the students and inspire them to enter the competition with a piece of work that could be either a poem, a short story or a play.

Louise Ellams, English teacher, said: “We were delighted to be invited to launch the competition at Flint High and the students were really enthusiastic throughout the workshop.

"Most of the group wrote descriptive pieces which could then be developed into stories but, when asked to practice writing some dialogue, several students chose to use the play form.

“The students had a great time and I thought Carri was brilliant with them."

Ms Munn said: “I was very pleased with the students’ effort and enthusiasm. Some of the ideas were excellent and I was very impressed by the creativity of all the students.”

The competition has now closed and the shortlisted entries will be notified on Friday, October 19.

An awards evening will be held at Theatr Clwyd on Tuesday, October 23 when the winners from each category will be announced and professional actors will read each of the short-listed pieces.

The winners will become Theatr Clwyd’s young writers for the year and will have the opportunity to work with professional writers to further develop their writing skills.

They will also be presented with a trophy and a cash prize.
