GARDEN waste collections in Wrexham could reduce to just once a month during the winter.

Usually green bins in the county are collected every fortnight, but in response to last year’s budget consultation, some residents suggested Wrexham Council could save money by decreasing the service during colder months.

As a result, leading councillors are set to discuss emptying them once a month during December, January and February.

According to council figures, the demand for green bins to be emptied drops by about 80 per cent when temperatures get lower.

Council leader Mark Pritchard said: “A couple of people will be pleased in Wrexham because I continually have correspondence off two individuals who ask me why we send out vehicles in the winter when there’s nothing to collect, so hopefully those emails might stop now.

“We weren’t going to do this as quickly – we were going to look to do it in the future, but because of the provisional settlement we’ve had to fast track some changes quicker and this is one.

“The lead member says he thinks we can make savings in that department. We’re going to roll it out from November.”

People who have extra green bins can still have them all collected at the same time when the changes are brought in.

The local authority currently charges an annual fee of £30 per extra green bin.

The proposals will be discussed at a special executive board meeting on Tuesday.
