A SCHOOL and a stately home joined forces to offer pupils an active fundraiser.

Pupils at Ysgol y Llan, in Whitford, embarked on a sponsored walk to Mostyn Hall, a Victorian estate owned by the Mostyn family who has had an agricultural influence over Rhewl, Tremostyn, Flintshire for the last 500 years.

Nearly 100 pupils from reception to year six took part, raising just under £500 for a worthy cause.

This money will go towards creating a space and resources for 'Emotional Literacy Support'. Key members of staff have recently been trained to deliver an ELSA programme in school, aiming to offer this to any pupils who may need the support, now or in the future. Support can include social skills, emotions, anger management, behaviour, anxiety, relationships, friendships, loss and bereavement etc.

Bryan Griffiths, headteacher, said: "As a school, we recognise how important pupil well being is and we are therefore including this within our school improvement plan this year. Mental health and well being is fast becoming a national priority and this is one way in which we wanted to improve our own provision within the school.

"The children were all very enthusiastic and supportive of one another. The weather stayed dry and this resulted in a leisurely walk for everyone involved. The walk provides everyone with time to chat, take in the surroundings and enjoy the spectacular views - it really creates a family atmosphere during the walk and promotes health and well being."

Mr Griffiths said the school has always had strong links with Mostyn Hall and Lord Mostyn, having taken part in many projects over the years and annually participate in events such as the walk and Christmas carol singing outside the main hall.

He said: "Mostyn Hall staff are always very supportive and ensure that the cattle are moved from the fields before our walk and they provide us with refreshments on the day.

"So far we have raised £475.50 and we expect more money to come in before the end of the week. Our parents are very supportive when we participate in events such as this and we wish to thank everyone who has sponsored or supported the event."
