A suspected arson at a Wrexham barbers' shop "could have been a whole lot worse" without the actions of a quick-thinking tenant.

Fire crews battled a blaze which started when a moped was torched and the flames spread to Just Gents Barbers shop on the corner of Poyser Street and Victoria Road.

But before they arrived a tenant had turned a number of fire extinguishers on to quell the flames which had risen as high as the first floor window of his flat.

Owner Rebecca Edginton said: "One of the tenants who lives in the property tried to put the fire out himself. It could have been a whole lot worse had he not grabbed the fire extinguishers. I think his quick-thinking has saved the day."

Surrey-based Ms Edginton owns the shop and adjoining flats jointly with her sister, Holly, who was called out when the alarm was raised at 3am on Wednesday morning.

"The flames have gone quite high to reach the second floor window of the flats. There is a gas meter up there and it was melting its pipes, so there could have been trouble," added Ms Edginton.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they used one pump and a hosereel to extinguish the fire, which they reported spread to 15 square metres of the nearby shop and flats and affected a gas meter and gas pipes.

No-one was injured but only charred remains were left of the moped after the fire, which a service spokesman confirmed may have been started deliberately.

The barbers shop has been in the Edginton family since 1990. Rebecca Edginton says the sisters kept on the business after their father, John Clarke, popularly known as "John the Barber", passed away in April 2016.

She says the gas board (Wales and West Utilities) were called out to ensure the piping was safe.

The barbers shop, itself, shuts on Wednesdays but was open for business as normal on Thursday as there is no fire damage inside the shop.

North Wales Police said that a 40-year-old man from Wrexham has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a motorbike was set alight in Poyser Street at around 3am on Wednesday.
