WORK is to begin on the building of a new supermarket on the outskirts of a Wrexham village.

As part of a multi-million pound project in Ruabon next to the A483, German discount chain Aldi is building its third supermarket in the Wrexham area.

The company has confirmed that work will begin this month.

Phase one of this new development will also see a new Costa drive-thru and a Kay Group petrol station built.

Earlier this year permission for the supermarket was granted, adding to the outline permission previously given by Wrexham Council's planning committee for 319 houses, business units, a pub and hotel, which would make up phase two and three of the project.

Work to build the new Aldi supermarket in Wrexham is about to get underway.

An Aldi spokesman said: “We will begin construction of our new Wrexham store in Ruabon this October and plan to open the store in 2019.

"This will create up to 40 jobs and enable local people to shop and save closer to home."

When the development came before the planning committee in July, objections were raised against the plans by Cadw, which manages many of Wales’ historical monument and buildings, including that the design did not fit in with the nearby Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site and Wynnstay Hall.

But members of Wrexham Council’s planning committee approved the scheme by a unanimous vote.

Ruabon councillor Joan Lowe said: “We did have some reservations about highways matters, but these have been worked through and we’re now happy with those."

All buildings which form part of the development will be accessed by a central spine road linked to a new junction on the roundabout attached to the A539 and B5605.

The outline permission already includes conditions requiring a number of road improvements, including the installation of a signal controlled crossing, speed limit reduction on the dual carriageway to 30mph and the creation of a footpath into Ruabon.
