THE threat of more teacher strike action this week at a Wrexham school has been called off.

The strike was supposed to take place on Wednesday and Thursday, but in a text sent out from Gwersyllt Community Primary School, to be confirmed in a letter due to be received today, parents and guardians have been advised that more strike action has been withdrawn.

Strike activity has taken place in a continuing dispute over budget cuts and potential redundancies at the school, with teachers taking industrial action twice previously this year.

Earlier last month acting headteacher Jacqueline O'Toole said the decision to close classes or the school was in the best interests of health and safety, as staff taking industrial action would be against the wellbeing of pupils.

The text message sent to parents yesterday confirmed that all classes during the week will go ahead as normal.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, the Teachers’ Union, has said: “Strike action is always a last resort for teachers and it is regrettable that members of the NASUWT have been left with no option but these further days of action at Gwersyllt Community Primary School due to potential restructuring, and associated redundancies and job losses.

“Parents and the wider community should be left in no doubt that the NASUWT remains willing to engage with the employer to find a resolution to this dispute, with a view to withdrawing the planned industrial action.

"Parents will also be rightly concerned about the impact of the proposals the NASUWT is challenging on their children.”
