CHILDREN have been learning about World War Two by retracing the steps of evacuees sent to Wrexham.

During the Second World War children from Liverpool were evacuated to avoid the blitz and found themselves travelling to the town.

After they arrived in Wrexham, children were taken to the Majestic Cinema, now the site of the Elihu Yale pub, before being dispatched to their new families.

The children of Ysgol yr Hafod in Johnstown recreated this journey by dressing in period attire and walking from Wrexham General Station to the Elihu Yale, before heading to Wrexham Museum for a workshop on the Second World War.

The walk was led by Eleri Farley, assistant learning and access officer at Wrexham Museum, who was dressed as a typical air raid warden from the era.

She said: "People from Liverpool were evacuated to Wrexham as part of Operation Pied Piper. Back then children were led from the station to the Majestic Cinema, today it's a pub but I think we'd be in trouble if we took them in.

"After that we took the kids to the museum to show them pictures of the past and to encourage them to learn about history.

"The children were all dressed in typical evacuee clothing, although one or two were dressed in general outfits from the era including one Winston Churchill."
