More than 1,000 singers will take part in Wrexham Singing Streets, a free annual event organised by the office of Ian Lucas MP, which takes place on Saturday, September 29.

Of the 27 choirs due to attend, many are from the Wrexham area while others are coming from further afield.

Performances will take place at Wrexham Museum, Argyle Arch on Regent Street, Lord Street by the Arc sculpture, Queens Square, Tŷ Pawb and Eagles Meadow.

They begin at 11am and will run through until 4pm.

At 1pm, there will be a mass ‘big sing’ featuring the choirs and any members of the public who wish to join in.

Posters promoting the festival have started to appear across Wrexham, and Mr Lucas is urging the public to turn out in numbers and enjoy the performances.

He said: "The Singing Streets festival is something I take great pride in as it brings people into Wrexham and creates an amazing buzz in the town. It’s exciting to be so close to the big day.

"There really will be something for everyone – choirs of all ages performing songs from a wide variety of genres, from classical to pop.

"We even have two signing choirs, who use sign language and their performances really are a sight to behold.

"An event of this size takes a lot of planning and I'm grateful to the organisations and sponsors who work with us to make the Singing Streets festival such a wonderful occasion.

"I’m grateful for their hard work and cooperation as we couldn’t do this without them.”

The first Singing Streets festival took place in 2016 and was set up after Mr Lucas noticed how popular musical performances were at the town’s regular street festivals.

The idea was to create a big annual gathering of choirs to entertain the people of Wrexham and draw others from further afield into the town.

Glyndŵr University play a key role in delivering the event, along with John Jones Quality Acoustics, Wrexham Community Choir volunteers, Gateway Church and Wrexham Business Group CIC.

The festival is sponsored by Wockhardt, Wrexham Crime Link, Hays Travel and Gateway Church.

Wrexham Glyndŵr University Vice-Chancellor Professor, Maria Hinfelaar, said: “The Singing Streets festival really brings people together – it’s wonderful to see singers from all walks of life come together to fill the streets of our town with song.

“I’m delighted that, once again, Wrexham Glyndŵr University will be working alongside Ian Lucas MP, the Singing Streets team and all the sponsors to bring this event to life.

“There’s less than a month to go now, and I know everyone is working hard to put the finishing touches to the day.

"It’s going to be a great event – so do make sure you come down and join in the fun!”
