THE family of a Wrexham charity worker have presented a cheque in her memory to the Christie Hospital in Manchester.

Doreen Hodson, 68, of Caia Park, who died at the Maelor Hospital on June 21, was the dearly loved wife of Dave and mother to Cheree and Nichola.

Mrs Hodson was a much loved and respected member of the community and did a lot of charity work with Operation Christmas Child.

She had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in June 2017 and received chemotherapy treatment on the Palatine ward at Manchester's Christie Hospital.

Her brother-in-law Phil Walker said both Doreen and her family received wonderful support and friendship from the staff on the ward, along with expert diagnosis and treatment, which resulted in her going into remission enabling her to receive a stem cell transplant.

He said: "Despite the odd infection, all seemed to be going well until, sadly, she was admitted to the Maelor Hospital with sepsis but didn’t respond to treatment and passed away.

"Many friends and acquaintances gathered for her funeral and donated in memory of Doreen which was added to money raised when her daughters and other family members took part in a sponsored 5K run also in her memory.

"As well as working and being a mum, she invariably had a pair of knitting needles in her hands when not occupied with other activities."

The family raised a total of £1,700 and this was presented to members of staff on the Palatine ward.
