Ian Rush proved to be the star attraction as Penycae Football Club enjoyed a community fun day on Saturday afternoon.

The event, which was held in collaboration between the Football Association Wales (FAW) and McDonalds, saw dozens of children attend to pick up tips from the Wales and Liverpool legend, but more importantly, have some fun.

Rush, 56, was keen to stress just how important grass roots football events like this are for the local communities chosen to take part and the facilities provided are like nothing he had as a kid growing up in St Asaph.

He said: "It's great for the boys and girls and although the main thing is for them to enjoy it and have smiles on their faces, they're learning something too and keeping themselves fit at the same time.

"It's a big day out for the local community, who probably couldn't afford to put on things like this themselves, so it's great that McDonalds are supporting it."

Rush also took time out to praise the work of volunteers at the event who are taking time out of their lives to help put a smile on everyone's face.

He said: "When the kids enjoy, it's a job well done for the volunteers who all work so hard.

"These kids might only get the chance to come to something like this once, so I hope they can all take something from the day and maybe even improve and become better players."

Colin Jackson, the Chairman of Penycae FC said it was honour for the club to host such a prestigious event.

He said: "We've never had anything like this in the past and hopefully it will help us keep players and more importantly, bring in new volunteers."

Kurt Evans, coach of the under 13's hailed the impact of having a legend like Ian Rush come along and pass on some his football knowledge to the children.

"It's huge for any club in the area to have someone like Ian Rush come.

"Just having him here for a couple of hours, you can see the extra effort the kids are putting in, trying to impress."
