PEOPLE from Rhostyllen can be proud to say that their village is home to a world champion.

Max Edwards, 11, has become the world champion in taekwondo after beating the competition at the world championships in Birmingham last weekend.

Formerly a pupil at Ysgol Rhostyllen, Max is moving up to Ysgol Rhiwabon with another gold medal around his shoulders.

Max's Mum, Abigail Parker, said: "Max started about 14 months ago, training two to three times a week at the Ady Jones taekwondo club.

"He became the English champion back in March and now he's a world champion. About 30 children were in his group, all the way from Nepal, the USA, Malta and a couple from Ireland. He had five fights and won them all.

"To become champion twice in such a short space of time is quite incredible.

"We signed him up to build his confidence as he was getting picked on a bit at school. It's certainly helped and he's not as timid anymore.

"We've got the British Championship coming up in November, so we hope he brings home the gold again. He's moving up to secondary school after the summer, so he'll be writing to his old teacher to tell of his success."
