MINERA Lead Mines near Wrexham will benefit from a grant to re-open a vital visitor attraction and outdoor events space.

Supported by National Lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund, Groundwork North Wales, working in partnership with Wrexham Council, has received a grant to test sustainable ways to manage the Minera Lead Mines Visitor Centre so it can be open throughout the year.

The centre’s programme of summer events will provide opportunities for people to have their say on the site and how it can be provided sustainably.

Minera Lead Mines and Country Park offers people a glimpse into the industrial past of the Clywedog Valley.

There are still remains of the lead processing areas from the 18th and 19th Centuries, with a restored beam engine house, winding engines and boiler house.

The visitor centre helps tell the story of the 53 acres of land.

Karen Balmer, chief executive of Groundwork North Wales, said: “It’s great news for the local area and the community that we’ve received this support thanks to National Lottery players.

“We are really excited to be opening up the visitor centre at this beautiful historical site.

“The visitor centre will be open every day throughout the summer and we have a programme of exciting family events every Wednesday and Thursday and would encourage everyone to come and see what is going on at Minera and join in the activities.”

Tomorrow there will be an open day from 11am to 3 pm so visitors can find out what will be happening at the site over the summer.

Richard Bellamy, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Wales, said: “It is fantastic that this important historical attraction will be able to stay open to visitors for longer, so more people will have the chance to learn about this once vital industry to the local area.”
