CONCERNS have been raised for the safety of primary school children after a new traffic arrangement has caused 'chaos'.

A one-way system at Victoria Road in Mold came into force in recent weeks after Flintshire Council was successful in gaining Welsh Government finding to improve safety in the road.

But town councillors have shared their concerns that the new arrangements are not being adhered to and in some cases children of Ysgol Bryn Coch, in Victoria Road, are being put in danger.

Dave Hill, town centre manager for Mold, told colleagues at a meeting last week that the scheme is a 'work in progress'.

He said: "I went round there last week to have a look and there were a number of issues.

"One thing that is pleasing is that it is being resurfaced to sort out the lines, but there are still cars parking down the one side that they are not supposed to be.

"But the road going down past the cemetery to Tyddyn Street is very impressive in terms of the yellow lines and the way it has been completely transformed."

Cllr Chris Bithell told the meeting that an ongoing traffic restriction in Chester Street has added to the complications and that sometimes two flow traffic 'is going to have to take place' to accommodate that.

He continued: "The only part of Tyddyn street affected is the very end where there is a pathway which was put down many years ago to link the pathway from Tesco to that path alongside the cemetery."

Councillor Sarah Taylor said she had concerns about vehicles accessing the footway, adding: "I have been taking my grandchildren to school and I walk through from Fordd Pentre.

"What was quite perturbing was as all the children were walking up there were cars coming from Tyddyn Street up behind them tooting their horns to get them to move out of the way.

"If that is a footway I don't see a problem with putting bollards there to stop the traffic going through.

"That is dangerous. It was a big 4x4 Landrover and you could see kids and bikes and scooters scattering to get out of the way."

Cllr Andrea Mearns added: "I met the head teacher at Ysgol Bryn Coch. She is saying people are driving up the one way the wrong way and also parking the wrong way.

"She has reported it to the police and they have suggested she takes that forward with Flintshire Council, because she is concerned about her children.

"The other thing with the one way system is that at the moment it is absolute chaos. There is no indication how you can get to the school on the signs - I was at the cemetery minding my own business and ended up directing traffic."

Flintshire Council has been approached for a comment.
