A MAN who went on the rampage in the early hours of the morning at the Plassey campsite caused over £4,000 worth of damage, a court heard.

Nathan Torrence smashed 12 windows and broke street lamps, plant pots and other fixtures and fittings during the act of wanton vandalism at the leisure park in Eyton. But afterwards he was coy with police as to his motives, only saying there had been a previous feud between himself and the owners.

Prosecutor James Neary said the park's manager, John Brookshaw, was woken by the sound of a crunching noise and later received a call from his father who found four security lights had been smashed.

Information signs were also pushed over and a tap turned on and Torrence was spotted pulling over football goalposts before he was caught at the site.

The vandalism also included broken mirrors and soap dishes as well as broken bollards with the Plassey's owners estimating the damage to run to £4,320.

Torrence, 34, of Bryn Offa, Wrexham admitted criminal damage on May 18 as well as being in breach of a conditional discharge imposed by Wrexham Magistrates' Court on April 4.

Cath Jagger, defending, said the defendant was a diagnosed schizophrenic and added: "It is still very unclear as to the motive. But there was no threats or struggle at the scene."

Probation officer Andrew Connah said Torrence had told him there was an ongoing dispute with the owners of the campsite and he fully accepted responsibility for his behaviour.

The magistrates placed Torrence under an 12-week curfew from 8pm to 8am as part of a community order.

Because of his means he was ordered to pay only £600 compensation to the Plassey, but a restraining order was placed on him prohibiting him from entering the campsite indefinitely, while his previous conditional discharge was left in place.
