DOUBT has been cast over the future of a town centre sports field, with fears it could be sold off for housing.

Surveyors have been spotted on land on Dean Road, home of Borras Park Albion Football Club amid concerns plans to build hundreds of houses there could be revived.

At a meeting of Acton Community Council it was suggested the land, which is jointly owned by Wrexham Council and Glyndwr University, could be valuable to a developer.

Rhosnesni County Councillor Mike Davies and Community Cllr Ralph Hardy told the community council they had both seen surveyors working on the sports field in Rhosnesni.

They said it had sparked off speculation about the field, which was once the home of Wrexham Rugby Club and is now used by Borras Park Albion FC and other sports organisations.

Cllr Hardy said it would mean increased pressure on those now using the field to find alternative grounds.

Former Rhosnesni County Cllr Anne Evans said that a few years ago there were plans mooted to build 300 homes on the land but that proposal was eventually abandoned.

But members shared their concerns that this plan might be renewed as both Wrexham Council and Glyndwr University had to be aware of the financial value of the land for housing.

They added that any such proposal would need to factor in access from behind the shops at Borras.

When approached by the Leader to about what potential plans they had for the site, the university and the council remained tight-lipped but confirmed the future of the land is up for discussion.

A spokesman for Glynd?r University said: “As part of our Campus 2025 programme, we are reviewing all of our current assets including a piece of land on Dean Road which we jointly occupy with Wrexham Council.”

A Wrexham Council spokesman added: “We are looking at the potential future use of our building and land on this site.”
