A PHONE box will be painted bronze to honour the success of a winter Olympic medal winner.

In February the Leader reported how Laura Deas, who grew up in Llanfynydd and went to school in the village, scooped a bronze medal in the skeleton event at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.

Llanfynydd resident Rob Dewey told the Leader a group of residents are in the process of refurbishing a phone box near the village’s post office to pay tribute to Laura’s achievement.

He explained: “When the Olympics were in London, their post boxes were painted gold.

“Our post box was recently repainted in post office red so we couldn’t change that but the phone box next to it which is a feature of the village has looked in need of some TLC for a while.

“A few of us in the village thought this was a golden opportunity to repaint it to celebrate Laura’s success.

“Some broken panes of glass have now been replaced and years of flaking paint have been brushed away and a coat of bronze paint is being applied.

“Later in the year we hope that Laura will come and officially ‘open the box’ – although she won’t be able to make a call as the phone itself has long since been removed.”

Ewan Deas, Laura’s father, lives in the village and said he was delighted with the idea.

He told the Leader: “I think Laura has put Llanfynydd on the map and we want to keep that.

“We had been planning to repaint the phone box anyway but some of my friends in the village had this idea and I was delighted with it. Laura has heard about it and she is very pleased.”
