PLANS for hundreds of new homes in Buckey have been submitted.

The Leader reported in February how a public consultation took place to gauge views on plans for by Skye Homes Flintshire Ltd for a mixed use scheme of 435 homes and a 450 square metre retail unit on land at Spon Green in the town.

Following the consultation, a full planning application has now been received by Fintshire Council’s planning department - the accompanying documents for which have not yet been made available to the public.

Buckley Bistre East ward councillor Arnold Woolley told the Leader he feels there is a ‘well voiced’ opposition to the plans after a committee set up to oppose the scheme met in February.

He said: “The meeting took place at the cricket club, which was packed.

“The biggest worry is the traffic in every direction and the lack of infrastructure. There is also the matter of losing more of the green barrier.

“The green barrier is bordered by Meg’s Lane which runs to Spon Green, Bannel Lane, Padeswood Road South and the A5118.

“There is another planning application in for 168 homes on land south of Meg’s Lane so with both of those plans people don’t wish to see the green barrier penetrated by more houses.

“All residents should take interest in what is being proposed and decide whether they are supportive of it or against it and let their voices be heard.

“I will be representing the voices of local people, who seem to be against it.”

On a dedicated website for the public consultation, a statement explained: “This scheme presents an exciting and unique opportunity for Buckley, to provide a much-needed mix of housing with subsequent open space.

“The scheme has been carefully designed to be low in density and respectful to the surrounding area.”

The development would also include new roads, open space and landscape planting.

According to the site, 139 of the homes will have two bedrooms, 245 will have three bedrooms and the remaining 51 homes will have four bedrooms.

Buckley Pentrobin county councillor Mike Peers, who chairs the planning section of town council meetings and sits on Flintshire Council’s planning committee, told the Leader that while he could only offer a preliminary view on the proposals during the public consultation phase, he felt the proposed retail units could take away from the town centre, where there are a number of empty units currently and which Buckley Town Council is trying to regenerate via the town masterplan.
