Schools from across Flintshire came together to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

Seven Flintshire school, as well as the NEW Dance Youth dance company and 2Faced took part in a collaborative dance performance entitled ‘For the Fallen: Flintshire Boys in Performance’.

Following a nine-week series of rehearsals, a total of 170 boys from Ysgol Bryn Pennant, Ysgol Cae’r Nant, Ysgol Trelogan, Queensferry CP School, Ysgol Ty Ffynnon, Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, and Ysgol Golftyn, 15 performers from NEW Dance Youth Dance, and two from 2Faced Dance Company, performed to an audience of over 300 at Connah’s Quay Civic Centre.

Angela Fessi, artistic director of NEW Dance, said: “NEW Dance uses movement as a vehicle to encourage the children to explore, investigate, and use their imagination around chosen topics.

“We do not go into schools with set choreography for the children to learn nor do we dictate how they should move. Instead, we ask the children to create their own movements that are then crafted into choreography by our practitioners, so what the audience saw was the pupils’ own movements and ideas.”

The scheme was subsidised by the Arts Council of Wales, Flintshire County Council, and the National Lottery.

Andrew Sutton, year five and six teacher at Ysgol Bryn Pennant said it was good to get the boys out of their comfort zone.

He added: “I’m the only male teacher so I accompanied the boys for the project which done a lot for their creativity and teamwork.

“It was good for them to see that dance doesn’t have to be ballet or whatever, you can put images like strength and power into a routine and it was good to see them up on the stage tackling a difficult subject.”
