Forty Flintshire schools have shut their doors after heavy snow hit the area overnight.

Despite the county's gritters making headway yesterday evening and again during the small hours of the morning, 39 schools in the area are closed due to the adverse weather conditions.

Decisions have been taken following individual risk assessments by head teachers relating to site conditions and in some cases the availability of school transport.

The primary schools reported closed this morning are:

Ysgol Merllyn in Bagillt, Bryn Tirion Unit, Brynford Primary School, Ysgol yr Esgob in Caerwys, Ysgol Bro Carmel, Ysgol y Foel, Brookfield Primary School, Ysgol Bryn Deva, Wepre Primary School, Drury Primary School, Cornist Park School, Gwynedd Primary School, St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Ysgol Croes Atti, Gronant CP, Gwespyr Picton/ Ysgol Mornant, St Winefride's CP, Ysgol Gwenffrwd, Ysgol Maes Glas, Ysgol Maes y Felin, Lixwm Primary School, Ysgol Bryn Pennant, Nannerch CW, Ysgol Bryn Garth, Rhos Helyg, Trelawnyd Voluntary Aided School, Ysgol Gynradd Trelogan, Ysgol Terrig, Ysgol y Llan, Ysgol Maes Hyfryd, and Ysgol Pen Coch.

The Young Persons Education Centre at Coleg Cambria PRU, The Assessment Centre PRU in Mold, Troi Rownd PRU in Queensferry, and The Learning Centre PRU in Shotton are also closed due to today's weather.

Four Flintshire high schools currently remain closed, including Elfed High School in Buckley, St Davids High School in Saltney, Connah's Quay High School, St Richard Gwyn in Flint and Holywell High School.

The Met Office has warned of further snow showers throughout the day and Flintshire currently holds a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.

North Wales Police have also issued a reminder that conditions are dangerous on the roads, and are urging motorists across the region to slow down and take care.

All schools in Wrexham are open.
