A caravan was completely destroyed in a blaze at a chalet site, with nearby residents hearing a series of explosions.

The drama happened shortly before midday on Sunday when the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire at the Misty Waters Caravan and Chalet Park in Holywell.

A pump was sent from Holywell fire station and another from Prestatyn to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters battled the blaze for up to 90 minutes, resulting in what residents claim was an unexpected toll on the area’s water supply, draining resources.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “The cause is unknown at present but it is believed to possibly be due to electric or gas supply. It is thought the cause is accidental – but we have not confirmed the cause.”

Ash was to be seen falling on the pavement outside the private caravan park in the hours after the fire, which was still to be seen yesterday.

Residents reported hearing three loud explosions before they saw the flames engulfing the caravan .

They were shocked to discover their water supplies were curtailed in the hours after the blaze.

It is believed the loud bangs were caused by three gas bottles, situated close to the caravan, exploding in sequence.

It has been reported that water in the surrounding area turned yellow.

But after speaking to their water supplier, residents were reassured that no action was needed as the problem with the water had been resolved.
