THE jury may still be out on some ‘two-for-the-price-of-one’ meal offers in some quarters – but I have no such qualms about the Little Owl.

It nestles on Countess Way, between the Morrisons and the Parkgate Road roundabouts and it was never on my radar until I found myself with an hour to spare on hospital business one lunchtime recently.

A cheery waitress welcomed us over the threshold and pointed to the specials board filled with a multitude of goodies.

I opted for the ‘trio of lamb’ chops and, to be honest, I had no great expectations.

I fully expected three skinny chops from an undernourished young animal... so imagine my surprise and delight when my plate was delivered.

The chops were big and meaty – to the point that two would have done! However, waste not, want not and all that, and they were devoured with relish.

The meal came with a good selection of well-cooked vegetables and there was a choice of potatoes on offer – all accompanied by a tasty gravy.

My daughter had opted for the barbecued pork and she was very happy with the quality and quantity of the dish before her.

We were both full and in a bit of a rush so we were on the point of skipping dessert when we noticed they have a carry out service.

Strictly in the interests of a more thorough review rather than something based on ‘mains’ only, we decided to take our research home with us for devouring later.

Jenny had the elaborate raspberry creation, not too dissimilar from a knickerbocker glory, while I went for New York cheesecake with mango and fruit coulis which was consumed with gusto several hours later.

I’d had a half a cider and my daughter had a cordial and the bill for the lot came to less than £25.

Like previous reviewers, I’m sceptical about 2-4-1 deals but the Little Owl won me over. It was great value for quality food with a huge choice to pick from.

If you’re ever in that neck of the woods, I’d recommend it.
