WILL Thomas struck the winner as Berriew completed their first ever league double at the expense of Ruthin Town.

Eilr Edwards had given Ruthin the early advantage, only for Berriew to storm back into contention with a 25 yard blast from Ian Probert.

The home side completed their fightback on the stroke of half-time as Thomas steered home Shane Davies’ left-wing cross.

Berriew looked to complete the task in hand in the opening minutes of the second-half, with Probert going closest to finding the net.

However Ruthin ended the game strongly, with the home side digging in their heels superbly during the latter stages to claim a vital victory.

Manager Russell Cadwallader said: “Had we won in midweek it would have been a perfect couple of days but as it is we are pleased with the win which represents our first league double at this level.

“We are still in sight of mid-table and potential safety, but we must keep working hard and picking up points where we can.

“We are also in the last eight of the Central Wales Cup, which is a competition we aspire to win. However there are plenty of decent sides still in the hat so we know we must be at our best.”
