THE biggest gate of the season turned out for what could be the last top flight meeting between Mid Wales’ oldest rivals.

The match threatened to be overshadowed by off the pitch events, with an increased police presence around the town and ground, following rumours of trouble among rival supporters.

With time running out to save Newtown’s season, the visit of high flying Aberystwyth Town took on added importance for the Robins.

Aberystwyth Town led after 15 minutes, with Conall Murtagh slotting home after Luke Bowen headed down Sion James’ fine cross.

Newtown have been unrecognisable since the turn of the year and refused to capitulate.

Dylan Blain worked room to force visiting goalkeeper Stephen Cann into action, before former Seasider Ross Stephens curled against the woodwork with a 20 yard free-kick.

Disaster struck on the hour when goalkeeper Dave Jones and retreating defender Andrew Thomas got themselves into a jumble, attempting to clear a seemingly innocuous long ball with Luke Bowen nipping in to score.

The goal was a sickener for Newtown fans, who went for broke in search of a route back into the game.

With 12 minutes remaining Stephens combined with Blain for Paul Roberts to hammer home a reply and set the derby up for a thrilling climax.

However despite mounting pressure, which included Stephens whipping another free-kick agonisingly wide, there was no way back for the Robins who now face a mammoth struggle to survive the Welsh Premier’s end of season mass relegation.
