Connah’s Quay Nomads’ famous Europa League victory will provide a major boost for the community, a councillor said.
Ian Dunbar, councillor for Connah’s Quay, said the 1-0 victory over HJK Helsinki provided the “icing on the cake” for their success in recent years.
The Nomads victory in the Europa League first round first leg was one of the finest in Welsh football history.
Cllr Dunbar said: “Over the last couple of years they have done very well and now have quite a lot of people who go and watch them.
“This has put the icing on the cake for the Nomads and also for the people of Deeside.
“To have a homegrown team like the Nomads do this is one that Flintshire can be proud of for a long time.
“It was an excellent match and I think they fully deserve what they did.”
The game pitted the part-time Nomads against a Finnish side that has dominated its domestic league for decades, and is a regular qualifier in major European competitions.
Cllr Dunbar added: “To see that they have beaten a team that is well known is fantastic.
“It puts Nomads on the map and the community of Deeside will be pleased.
“Anything like this brightens up the place and I think it will see the Nomads become a different team.”
Cllr Dunbar said the community was now hopeful the team can make it through to the second round after they visit Helsinki this week.
He said: “They know it will be tough but they only have to play like they did again.”
