LLANFAIR 2
YSCEIFIOG 3

AWAY day specialists Ysceifiog climbed into the top-three on the back of an entertaining win at Llanfair.

Sion Evans’ charges bagged their third win from four away matches in 2011, but they were made to work hard for the points after twice being pegged back.

Llanfair player-boss Roger Beech said: “It’s one of the best games we have had in Llanfair for a long while.

“It was end-to-end and both teams competed well, trying to play football on a good pitch.”

Ysceifiog made the better start and took the lead when youngster Matthew Palin scored his first ever goal for the club.

Llanfair did have their own opportunities to hit back in the first half with Neil Davies and Tom Strapps both going close.

The home side did manage to level things in the second period when Pete Leatt’s cross was diverted home at the far post by Steve Roberts.

Almost immediately, Ysceifiog regained the initiative with top scorer Tim Hughes on the scoresheet after Matthew Palin’s initial effort was saved.

“At that stage the young lads’ heads could have dropped, but they kept going and playing,” added Beech.

Sixteen-year-old prospect Elgan Lightfoot was the instigator of Llanfair’s next equaliser as he set up Steve Roberts for his second of the night.

That drew a huge cheer from the home faithful on the sidelines - but there was another big celebration from the Ysceifiog contingent when Tim Hughes’ powerful shot sealed the win.

Elgan Lightfoot and Ifan Roberts were impressive figures in home colours, while Ben Walker was the Llanfair Tengo Media man of the match.

Ysceifiog’s Danny Jones admitted: “It would have been a travesty if we didn’t get all three points.

“In the first half we played good football and passed it around well.”
