PLANS could soon be submitted for new recreational land on the former Brymbo steelworks site.

Brymbo Community Council is in talks with Brymbo Development Ltd (BDL) and Reed Construction Holdings about creating a grassed playing field at the top of Link Road

Brymbo Cllr Paul Rogers told a community council meeting that talks had been ongoing for more than a year between BDL and a residents association because residents have complained about a lack of recreational areas.

If the grassed area is created it is hoped that football pitches and possibly play equipment could also be created at a later stage.

Cllr Rogers said that following talks with BDL and Reed Construction it was planned to level the land for football pitches and it was clear it was also planned to spend a lot of money in developing other play facilities for the community on the site.

“I am pleased that BDL are willing to work with the community to improve recreational space for the benefit of young people in our areas,” he said.

“I am in discussions with BDL and a developer with regards to the options available.”

Cllr Ken Monti said the community council should fully support a plan to provide much needed facilities for the community.

Cllr Brian Stapley agreed but said that the youngsters of Tanyfron would be attracted to the new site and a new safety footbridge crossing the busy road for them to use must be made.

After the meeting Cllr Rogers said that he hoped a planning application could be submitted in the near future.

“There is definitely a need for more open space and there is a concern that young people don’t have enough,” he said.

Richard Heaton, managing director of Reed Construction Holdings in Brymbo, said: “We’re evaulating the conversion of semi-derelict space that doesn’t currently benefit the community at large to create effective green space.”

It is estimated that there are now 800 new homes in the Brymbo and Tanyfron areas since the closure of the works.
