YSCEIFIOG 3
TREFNANT 1

HAS a team ever won the Shield and finished at the bottom of the Summer League in the same season?

Answers on a postcard please, but that’s exactly what Trefnant achieved on Monday as they concluded the ultimate up-and-down season.

With double points on offer at Ysceifiog, new North Wales Times Shield holders Trefnant knew that they only required a draw to finish off the foot of the standings.

However, it was Danny Jones’ hosts who ran things to run out comfortable winners - and with the six points that they picked up, Ysceifiog end a difficult season in seventh place.

Both clubs were struggling for a starting XI ahead of kick-off and Danny Jones said: “We only had 11 players - and we started with 10.”

While Trefnant did have a fair bit of possession in the first half, Ysceifiog defended well and got their retaliation in early.

The Flintshire side took the lead with a first goal of the campaign from 2009 top scorer Simon Holloway.

Inside 20 minutes and Ysceifiog were two goals to the good courtesy of Marcus Penrhyn-Jones’ third strike of the summer.

Despite missing a number of key players, Trefnant did forge a few scoring opportunities on the night.

Lee Ferguson and Simon Jones went close on a few occasions, and it was Jones who headed the visitors back into the game.

But Ysceifiog were the better side on the night and they sealed the three points in the second half with Joe Mulvey slotting in his fifth goal of 2010.

For Trefnant, the back four of Jamie Jelleyman, Russ Vaughan, Lawrie Bell and Mark Musgrave all played well.
