CLAWDDNEWYDD 1
HOW important could one Clawddnewydd goal be, come the end of this week?
A first ever Summer League goal from youngster Owain Jones at Ysceifiog kept the defending champions in the mix to retain their crown.
The slender 1-0 scoreline means that Clawddnewydd remain within four points of frontrunners Cefn with two games left to play - but victory over Ysceifiog was far from manager Mark Lewis’ mind just hours ahead of kick-off.
It was a fraught afternoon leading up to the trek to Flintshire for Lewis, who said: “With just nine men, we were really struggling for a team.
“I managed to get 11 in the end and we were down to just the bare bones.”
Despite the pre-match struggles, Lewis felt that his side gave a champion display to win the game and he couldn’t praise his back-five enough for their showing.
“The defence was amazing and Ian Davies was outstanding in goal,” he added.
At the other end of the pitch, the only goal came midway through the first half.
On his Summer League debut, Owain Jones beat three Ysceifiog players before brilliantly slotting the ball into the top corner for a goal of real quality.
There was a chance for Clawdd to extend their lead in the second period as top scorer Jordan MacCarter hit the crossbar with an effort.
Osian Roberts, Huw K Williams, Dave Millington and Rob Lewis gave outstanding displays at the back for Clawddnewydd and Lewis added: “I was very pleased with the performance.
“You could see the reaction of the players that they were very pleased.”
