THE leader of Wrexham Council is to take up concerns about the roles of community police officers with the North Wales force’s commanders.

Councillors on Gwersyllt Community Council have said they are very disappointed their area has only one community police officer, whereas just two years ago they had three.

Wrexham Council leader Aled Roberts has said he has passed on concerns about community support officers increasingly doing the work of beat managers to chief constable Mark Polin and chief superintendent Ruth Purdie.

Cllr David Griffiths, chairman of Gwersyllt Community Council, said Gwersyllt had been getting police officer cover from Gresford which meant the officer involved had a wider patch to cover.

He said: “It is not fair on the community or the police covering the Gwersyllt area.”

He added he hoped the situation was not due to financial pressure being put on North Wales Police by the government.

In a statement Cllr Roberts said: “At a recent meeting lead members raised concerns regarding the increasing use of police community support officers to carry out duties previously done by beat managers.

Offa Community Council also recently complained that officers had no sooner got used to their patches than they were moved on to work in a different area.
