Bomb disposal experts were called as workmen found a suspicious package in an empty property

Police and bomb disposal experts attended at a property in Hywelfa, Southsea after reports of a suspicious package being found at about 9.15am.

Emergency Services were quickly on the scene to secure the property and initially evacuated the adjoining houses while they examined the package.

Officers urged people to avoid the areas to allow emergency services free access while the investigation took place, though the package turned out to be harmless component parts of fireworks.

They are to be disposed of by Wrexham Council.

The cordon was lifted shortly before 4pm.

Chief Inspector Mark Williams, of North Wales Police, said: “The incident was reported to police in very good faith and the response of all our emergency service partners and EOD (Explosives Ordinance Disposal) was reassuringly prompt and professional and I’d like to pass on my sincere thanks to all those involved.

”I’d also like to extend our thanks to the local community for their patience and understanding whilst events unfolded and I’m happy to report the area will be returned to normality as soon as possible.”

The package had been found by an employee of contractors who have been working on properties in the street over the last few weeks.

Police cordoned off the area around the house and section of road leading to it was closed to traffic.
