Whitchurch turned purple last week as the town pledged its support to Cancer Research and Relay for Life. Town Mayor Councillor Mike McDonald was on hand to act as judge as shops all over the town competed for the best window display – won by Sentiments, in Green End – while Relay for Life had a stall at the Farmers’ Market. Ruth Hislop, one of the Whitchurch Relay for Life organisers, was delighted with the turnout from the businesses and thanked them all for joining in. “We were thrilled and amazed at the amount of support shown to us by the businesses, the majority of whom had supported our venture by a few balloons to full blown purple dressed windows,” said Ruth. “Every year the town opens their arms out to us and shows us how a community can pull together to work towards a common goal which is joining this global fight against cancer in the hope that all cancers will soon have a cure. “The Farmers Market was busy, as too was the coffee morning being held at the White Bear for this charity. “It was a tough job to decide on any winners because, as our mayor Mike McDonald said, everyone is a winner if we can join together in this fight against this terrible disease.” Cllr McDonald showed his support with a purple hoodie and trainers, presenting a trophy and certificate to Sentiments who had two window displays. Runners-up were Maxine’s Fruit Shop and Green End Pharmacy. Whitchurch Relay for Life takes place at Dearnford Lake on July 1 and 2.If anyone would like to join them, send an email to ruthhislop@gmail.com
