ROB EVANS came close to causing a famous cup shock with Wrexham and believes he could be part of an upset tomorrow.

The midfielder was in the Reds side that took the lead through Mark Carrington at Stoke City in January 2015, although the then-Premier League outfit scored three times in the last 10 minutes to secure a 3-1 win.

Now plying his trade at Northern Premier League side Warrington Town, Evans is hoping to continue the Yellows run in this season's competition by beating FC Halifax in the fourth qualifying round.

The Shaymen play in the National League, two divisions above Warrington, but Evans hopes his side can make the most of home advantage and secure a place in round one.

"We have got a really good squad capable of playing in the National League North," said Evans. "I think it could also do a job mid-table in the National League.

"We have got a good group who want to do well for the club as we have shown lately.

"I fancy our chances against Halifax.

"We are the underdogs which is a good thing. We have got nothing to lose, especially at home where we have got a good record, so hopefully we get through to the first round and see who we get."

Evans has fond memories of the day Wrexham took the lead at Stoke in front of nearly 5,000 travelling supporters.

"I was 18 and started the game, it is probably the highlight of my career playing against the likes of Charlie Adams and Peter Crouch," said Evans, who later became Reds' captain.

"When the FA Cup comes around I always think what would I do to get back there, Stoke away.

"They had to bring the big boys and it was a great day."

Warrington, who are managed by ex-Chester captain Paul Carden, go into the tie in superb form and sitting second in their division, although an eight game winning run in the league came to an end on Saturday when they were beaten 1-0 by Matlock Town.

And a 2-1 win against Telford United of the National League North in the previous round of the cup gives Evans more belief that Warrington can progress.

"It is going really well," said Evans, who joined the Yellows in the summer after spending one season with Billericay following the end of his stint with hometown club Wrexham.

"We are second in the league with two games in hand so we are in a good position.

"We won eight league games on the bounce without conceding a goal until we lost on Saturday, and we have had a good run in the cup.

"We beat Telford in the last round which is a very good result. We battered them and deserved to win but we know it will be a tough game against Halifax."

Evans' stint with Warrington is going well but he has ambitions of returning to full-time football.

"I am enjoying my time there and it is nice being back at home," added Evans, who hails from Penycae.

"Hopefully I go back full-time one day. I had to drop down a couple of leagues to get my performances back up and I have shown that.

"I will keep doing what I am doing and see what happens at the end of the season."

Evans' former team Billericay are at home to Taunton while National League North leaders Chorley will fancy their chances of making it into Monday's first round draw. They take on Barrow at home.

Former Chester boss Neil Young will look to mastermind a shock for Marine at home to National League leaders Salford City while Dunston UTS, who ended Chester's cup dreams two weeks ago, face neighbours Gateshead in a cracking North East derby.

AFC Fylde, who knocked Wrexham out 12 months ago, host Chesterfield in one of a number of all-National League ties.

Boreham Wood welcome Dagenham & Redbridge, Leyton Orient go to Maidstone and Barnet face Braintree.
