BRAD WALKER has impressed in midfield but he has no qualms about filling in at centre-back if required.

The 23-year-old has started the last seven games since joining Wrexham on loan from Crewe Alexander, playing just in front of the Reds' defence.

But an injury to Jake Lawlor in the first half of Saturday's 2-1 win at Dagenham and Redbridge meant Walker had to switch to the heart of the back-four alongside captain Shaun Pearson.

It's a position Walker is familiar with and he doesn't mind where he plays for Wrexham as long as he is picked by Sam Ricketts.

"Midfield, where I have been playing for the gaffer here, I love it there just in front of the back four," said Walker.

"I thought I started the game really well on Saturday in that position until I had to go to centre-back.

"But I am comfortable playing there as well so as long as I am on the pitch, I don't care."

Walker was pleased with how he played at centre-back and wasn't affected by his own goal moments after Luke Young had put the Reds ahead at the end of the first half.

"I thought I did really well," said Walker.

"It was unfortunate for Jake to come off with his injury but apart from the two minutes after our goal, I thought I dealt with it well and we looked really comfortable."

On the own goal following a mix-up with Rob Lainton, Walker added: "It was just a mis-communication. He shouted 'keeper's' and I should have cleared it.

"We went in at half-time a bit down in the dumps but I thought we reacted really well.

"I don't think they would have scored if we didn't have that mix-up. We were resilient and hard to break down."

Wrexham sealed a third win in a row after Luke Summerfield converted a second half penalty and victory took the Reds up to second position, level on points with leaders Salford City.

But having again missed chances to make the game safe, Walker feels Wrexham need to be more clinical in front of goal.

"We need to be a bit more ruthless because we could have been out of sight at half-time," said Walker.

"The Havant game, Barnet and at Dagenham, if we are more ruthless in the first half the game is done, we can enjoy the second half, play football and we are in control of the game.

"We have been making it hard for ourselves just hanging on by the one goal but we are getting the three points and that is all that matters."

Wrexham visit Harrogate Town in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round on Saturday and Walker doesn't mind taking a break from the league despite being in superb form.

"Everyone loves the FA Cup so hopefully we go to Harrogate, keep the run going, get a win and progress into the first round," said Walker.

"It is a good time to have a two week break from the league, sitting joint top and in a healthy position."

Walker would love to have a cup run with Wrexham.

"We got to the second round at Crewe last year," added Walker.

"We beat Rotherham in the first round and I scored so that wasn't too bad.

"We got beat by Blackburn but I haven't really had a good run which I would love to have in the cup, it is a great competition."
