LUKE YOUNG stressed the importance of midfielders and defenders chipping in with their share of goals to boost Wrexham's promotion challenge.

Young and fellow midfielder Luke Summerfield both opened their account for the club in Saturday's 2-1 win at Dagenham and Redbridge which took the Reds up to second place in the National League.

Although Sam Ricketts' strikers have been in the goals this season, Young insists players need to contribute from all positions.

"Obviously the front lads are going to be looked upon with scoring the goals and getting into double figures," said Young. "But if we can chip in with goals throughout the whole squad in midfield and defence then we aren't going to be too far away and it will take the pressure off the front lads.

"It is good to get goals from all over the pitch and long may it continue."

Young, a summer signing from Torquay United, got off the mark in style by netting with a superb strike from 25 yards to give Wrexham the lead.

"I am very happy to score my first goal," said Young, who was named as a substitute in the National League team of the weekend with Summerfield in the starting XI.

"When it came back to me I just thought get a good strike on it and as soon as it left my foot I saw it heading for the top corner.

"It was nice for it to go in and give us a good start.

"You take a goal however they come but to score one like that was even better.

"But it was about the three points and the team effort was magnificent."

Young hopes there are many more goals to come.

"I set myself a target that I will keep to myself," said Young.

"As a midfielder you get looked upon with chipping in with the odd goal and how many goals you can create.

"It is one goal towards that target, hopefully I chip in with a few more and I get close to it come the end of the year."

The Daggers equalised just one minute after Young scored but Summerfield converted a second half penalty as Wrexham made it three wins in a row.

"It was frustrating going in at 1-1," said Young. "The goal we conceded deflated us a little bit but we were still level at the break and we came out second half fighting.

"We knew that we had to dig in as well as we played in the first half and add that little bit more quality then we would get the goal.

"Although it came from a penalty I think we could have scored a few more."

Wrexham switch their attention to the FA Cup on Saturday with the Reds heading to Harrogate Town in the fourth qualifying round.

Although maintaining a promotion challenge is the priority, Young would love to have a cup run with the Reds.

"Of course you want to continue the league form but it is another game and we will treat it as important as any," added Young.

"It is a chance to get through into the first round and regardless of whether it is a cup game, league game or a friendly, we want to win.

"I don't recollect playing in the first round with Torquay but hopefully we can get a good cup this year.

"I had a couple with Plymouth but in recent years I haven't really had one so it would be nice to get a good cup run."
