LUKE SUMMERFIELD says there was never any doubt that he was going to take Wrexham's first penalty of the season against Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday.

Sam Ricketts' side weren't awarded a spot-kick in the opening 15 games but that changed when Kevin Roberts was brought down in the second half at Victoria Road.

Summerfield, who converted the Reds' last penalty in the final pre-season friendly with Forest Green, assumed spot-kick duties despite Mike Fondop wanting to take it and the midfielder scored as his side won 2-1.

"I was always going to get the penalty," said Summerfield.

"I couldn't get the ball off him, anybody else I would have been alright; Mike is a big, strong lad and coming on he wants to score a penalty but I am the penalty taker and luckily enough it went in for us."

Summerfield, who has a double figure number of assists, was delighted to mark his first Wrexham goal with three points.

"It makes it extra special with a win," said Summerfield.

"My mindset has always been as long as we are winning and I am contributing the best that I know I can do day in, day out, and every game.

"If I had gone all season without getting a goal and we carried on winning, I would have took that to be honest.

"It was nice to get off the mark and it was extra special that the two Lukes won it!"

Fellow midfielder Luke Young opened his Wrexham account with a brilliant 43rd minute strike and although the Daggers equalised almost immediately, Summerfield sealed three points.

"It was a hard fought game, we came in at half-time a bit disappointed with 1-1 because we played really well for a lot of the first half and easily could have come in two or three up," said Summerfield.

"But second half we showed the grit we needed to get a win and luckily enough it was the winner from the penalty spot."

Manager Sam Ricketts was adamant that Summerfield was going to take the penalty and he praised his midfielder who has started every game this season.

"We had one last pre-season game, Summers took it and scored so he is our designated penalty taker," said Ricketts.

"As soon as it got given, I am confident in him.

"He is a fantastic player with a great range of passing and a calmness to take a penalty.

"It is not easy taking a penalty. I have taken them and missed a few in my time so fair play to anyone who stands up and puts the ball in the back of the net."

Ricketts admits the first penalty of the season was a long time coming.

"I was waiting for a penalty to come," added Ricketts. "We have had some real soft ones given against us.

"I have seen fouls going in on our players which we have had penalties given against us and nothing has been given so eventually one would drop for us.

"Pleasing the two midfielders scored."
