BRAD WALKER is enjoying being part of a Wrexham squad competing at the top end of the table.

The midfielder played in the Football League for Hartlepool United before joining Crewe Alexandra in 2017 but he has been allowed to leave the League Two outfit to join the Reds on loan until January.

Wrexham have hit the ground running and sit second in the National League after 11 games, just one point behind leaders Harrogate Town.

There's a long way to go this term but Walker admits there is nothing like playing for a team that is used to winning matches.

"It is brilliant to have a different feel around the camp," said Walker.

"I don't think I have been involved in a team so high up so it is brilliant to be winning games.

"After training and after games, you go back happy and we have just got to keep it going.

"Wins help your confidence and everyone is full of confidence, we are just ready to go for the next one now."

Walker has started the last two games in place of Akil Wright, coming in for his debut in the 1-0 win at Braintree before helping the Reds beat Ebbsfleet United 4-1 on Saturday.

Although delighted to be in the starting XI, Walker admits he was surprised to come in for Wright who won the National League player of the month award for August but welcomed manager Sam Ricketts' policy of rotating his squad.

"I was surprised," said Walker. "I have watched the games Akil played in and he is a top player.

"No doubt he will be back in the team soon but we have got good competition for places in the squad and it is healthy for us all.

"The gaffer is brilliant at what he does.

"He has trust in his players which is massive for the players who aren't even in the squad to know that the gaffer can change it week in, week out, and if you train right you will get your chance."

Wrexham produced their best display of the season against Ebbsfleet, the Reds scoring four times in the first half.

Walker feels he performed much better than at Braintree, but admits it was vital to leave Cressing Road with a win following a tough encounter.

"It is good to get some games and six points," said Walker. "I thought Saturday was a lot more like myself.

"The first game at Braintree was just head it and kick it but against Ebbsfleet we got the ball down and they couldn't handle how we played.

"All that mattered against Braintree was three points and we got them, which is a massive complement to ourselves that we can go to teams like that and win.

"But on Saturday we got a chance to do what we can do, press from the front and play football, and I think we did that in abundance."

Walker steps into the unknown when Wrexham face Sutton United on the 4G pitch at Gander Green Lane on Saturday.

"I have only ever trained on them," added Walker.

"You have just got to approach them as you'd approach any game.

"We have got a squad here who approaches every game right and prepares right so we will do all we can to try and get three points."
