Chris Maxwell has credited his time with Wrexham as a decisive factor in being called up to the Welsh national team.

A product of the Reds' youth system, the Preston North End goalkeeper returned to the Racecourse earlier this week to train with Ryan Giggs' Dragons side.

Maxwell's club career to date has comprised two spells with Wrexham, followed by stints at Fleetwood Town and Cambridge United before he made the move to Deepdale in 2016.

His international call-ups have come alongside those of fellow former Reds academy players Neil Taylor and Danny Ward.

Maxwell insists the club should be proud of its tradition of nurturing young Welsh talent and retains fond memories of his time with the Reds.

He said: “Wrexham is a massive club – the biggest in North Wales and for many a year it was the biggest in Wales. It’s no surprise to me that so many of us have come through the youth system.

"The club has produced some very good players over the years and that’s s down to the set-up that’s here. Hopefully that can continue and the club can push on into the football league.

"Every part of my career has been very enjoyable and there’s been a lot of hard work on top of that.

"My second stint here on loan it was unfortunate that we didn’t get promoted but from a personal point of view I’ve pushed on and hopefully Wrexham can do the same.

“I've got tons and tons of good memories here. I joined the club as a 10-year-old and Wrexham football club made me.

"Some of the staff that are still here it’s been great to see them. I owe them a lot and to the Wrexham fans who supported me at such a young age when I came into the team was great.

“So the club will always hold a place in my heart and it will always be somewhere I treasure."
