SCHOOL pupils donned their running shoes and hats in the fine weather in aid of the Race for Life.

Youngsters at Brynteg CP School completed 13 laps of their school field to raise money for the cancer charity yesterday.

The infants were first on the track, completing their running before they were followed by the juniors in the afternoon.

Despite being a very warm day, the youngsters were determined to complete their mission.

Headteacher Rachael Connell said: “We have done the Race for Life at the school for around five years now.

“We open it up to families to join in, so parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters are invited to get involved as well, so there is a real community feel to it on the day.

“Everyone takes part, from the two year-olds in our Flying Start nursery up to Year 6. Donations of £1.50 are made and that goes to the cancer charity – we have raised more than £300 so far today.”

Mrs Connell added conditions were made tougher by the heat, but that everyone preferred that to rain.

She said: “Everyone has done brilliantly considering it is the hottest day of the year.

“We’ve told everyone taking part to just do as much as you can, but some of the little ones have managed to do three miles.

“We have marked the field so they can do 13 laps, and at the end of each one they get a little stamp on their hand which hows how many they have done.

“The school council has got a little pop-up canopy and acted as marshals, handing out the drinks.

“It’s a real team effort, the whole day.”
