SAM WEDGBURY has joined Chesterfield.

The midfielder left Wrexham by mutual consent last week after holding talks with manager Sam Ricketts.

Brought in from Forest Green Rovers by Dean Keates last summer, Wedgbury played a key role as Wrexham challenged for promotion and he penned a new deal in February to keep him at The Racecourse for the 2018-19 campaign.

But Wedgbury, who hails from Sheffield, said the commute for training had become a burden and the club agreed for him to move on.

The 29-year-old had been linked with a move to Chesterfield, who were relegated to the National League last season, and he has now put pen to paper.

Manager Martin Allen released the following statement on the club's official website: "We have just signed Sam Wedgbury, who's a local lad. He's experienced and knows the league and he's a player I've tried to sign many, many times.

He's a central midfield player. He's a competitor and he will be good for us."

Allen has also completed the signing of former Wrexham goalkeeper Shwan Jalal from Macclesfield Town.

Jalal, who spent the 2016-17 season at The Racecourse, helped Macclesfield win the National League title last term but he was released by the Silkmen despite being named in the National League team of the year.
