DAVID BELLIS led the way as Special Olympics Wrexham Athletic Club won 40 medals at the North Staffs Regional Competition.

Wrexham were one of 10 regions competing at Stoke's Northwood Stadium, winning eight gold, 21 silver and 11 bronze medals with Bellis at the forefront.

The impressive Bellis won gold in the 1500m and softball as well as silver in the 800m, while Cai Williams made a mark in his first major competition, taking silver in the 100m and bronze in the softball.

Chris Williams (200m), Greg Vickers (100m), Peter Loftus (200m), Megan Weetman (shot) and Gaynor Jones (shot) were the other individual gold medal winners for Wrexham, who saw their 4x50m relay A team finish in first place.

Williams added silver in the softball to his gold, while Vickers claimed standing long jump second place, Loftus grabbed third in the shot, Weetman finished second and third in the long jump and 100m respective and Jones secured bronze in the standing long jump.

Laura Watson bagged three silvers in the 100m, softball and standing long jump, while Lesley Butt came second in the 50m and shot, and third in the softball, and Tony Gittins secured silver in the 200m and standing long jump before claiming 100m bronze.

There were silver medals in the shot and long jump for Michael Kyffin-Jones, while Jason Coles secured two second placed finishes in the shot and long jump as well as third in the 100m.

Billy Roberts clinched silver in the 100m before grabbing bronze medals in the shot and standing long jump, while Damon Hughes was third in both the 100m and standing long jump and Neil Morris also took bronze in the 100m.

The B 4x50m relay team took silver, which was matched by the 4x100m A team, who finished a place ahead of the B team.
