Sports fans were encouraged to do something different during an ice hockey match on the weekend.

Deeside Dragons played against Blackburn Hawks at Deeside Leisure centre, but it was a match with a difference.

Spectators could watch the match free of charge and were asked to bring in a soft toy. The toy was then thrown onto the ice rink as soon as the first goal was scored.

Toys were then collected and donated to North Clwyd Animal Rescue for the animals they rescue.

Jean Sellers, volunteer manager for the charity, said: “When I got the email inviting us along I had to read it twice as it is quite unusual, but it is a really nice gesture and they usually have a good turnout at matches too.

“It means there is now a toy for each animal as we do go through a lot of toys regularly.”

Around 180 spectators came to watch the match and Captain Chris Keating scored the opening goal, triggering the teddy bear toss.

Deeside won the match 5-2 with organiser Karl Bacon saying it was a success and just what the club needed.

He added: “It’s a great way to get kids into sports and get everyone involved for a good cause, it was free entry as well.”

North Clwyd Animal Rescue was founded about 30 years ago and has since become one of the largest animal welfare charities in the North West.

Working with local councils, they rehome about 1,800 domestic animals each year.
