The new manager of Wrexham AFC Women believes the reformed club can flourish after a three-year absence from the game.

Former members of the Welsh Premier Women's League, the Reds withdrew in 2015/16 citing a lack of players.

But after a successful junior coaching stint with Wrexham's Racecourse Community Foundation, Luke Wynne will now take charge of the club's senior women's team.

Wynne said: "We're really looking forward to getting started for next season.

"I've been with the Foundation for about three years as a football development officer and I've worked a lot with the girls under 16 team there.

"Six of those players will now be joining the senior team, which gives us a solid starting point for our recruiting.

"As well as having more junior team next season, the Foundation have also agreed a deal with Coleg Cambria and their U16 side.

"Some of their players will be playing twice a week, with games for the College on a Wednesday and for Wrexham on a Sunday.

"The idea is that it will give the younger girls more game time and experience of playing against senior opposition too.

As part of the North Wales Women's League, the club will play its home games at Penycae's ground in the 2018/19 campaign.

Wynne hopes that the expansion of the junior system will allow young talent to develop within te club to continue feeding the senior side in the years ahead.

"It's important to have that kind of pathway system in place, I think" he added.

"In time hopefully we'll see talented younger players improving season by season and pushing for a spot in the senior team.

"If we can build that here then eventually we might be looking at promotion and maybe a development side here."

The club will now look to recruit new talent for the season ahead, with open training session dates still to be confirmed.
